This book, published by Archetype Publications in association with HES & DE GRAAF Publishers, surveys the history of the techniques of engraving, etching and plate printing - ie that of manual intaglio printmaking processes - from its beginning in the s until today. The technical brilliance of early European woodcuts is astonishing (and in the hands of masters such as Dürer, the craft becomes great art), but the cutting away of all the white parts of an image is a laborious and perverse way of proceeding. Within the first century of printing two more congenial methods become available - engraving and etching.

A Short History of Engraving & Etching, for the Use of Collectors and Students: With Full Bibliography, Classified List and Index of Engravers: Author: Arthur Mayger Hind: Publisher: A. Constable & Company, Limited, Original from: the University of Michigan: Digitized: Length: pages: Export Citation: BiBTeX EndNote RefMan. Etching is traditionally the process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In modern manufacturing, other chemicals may be used on other types of material. As a method of printmaking, it is, along with engraving, the most important technique for old master prints, and remains in wide use today.

Histories of prints often begin with an outline of printmaking processes. In the case of Arthur M. Hind's standard A History of Engraving and Etching from the 15th Century to the Year (3rd edition, ), the technical information is given ‘in just sufficient detail to enable the student of the history of engraving to obtain a proper comprehension of cause and effect’.Author: Roger Gaskell. Now, more than half a century since the Poynter brothers first set to work in their mother’s cellar, The Arden group of companies employs people around the world and has an annual turnover of £11 million, through our Dies, Engraving and Software divisions. For Arden Engraving, we’re now a leading manufacturer of complex tools [ ].
